Tying the Same Thing Murray

This week's fly tying video is a hair wing Atlantic salmon fly that was invented by Doug Hastings of Sydney, Nova Scotia.  From all accounts it has been a serious producer of the "King of Fish" for some twenty years or so.  As usual, Tim Flagler did a great job producing the video and capturing the essence of the fly and the elements that make it so aesthetically appealing to both the angler and apparently the salmon.  I used black goat hair for the wing, but I have seen this pattern tied with black bear hair and also moose hair, which I understand is how the original "Murray" was tied.

Sometimes the same thing is a good thing.

Sharpen your hooks.

Dear Matt,

I have gone trout fishing many times this year and I have only caught a few fish. I have tried many of the power bait flavors, night crawlers, wax worms, and salmon eggs. Do you have any suggestions for a good bait to use. Also what do you store the trout in after you catch them so they stay fresh before you freeze them at home. Thanks for the help.

Mr. Q - Up kind of late. Were you having nightmares again?

Anon - It's not the bait. I always store the fish by removing the hook and placing the trout back into the stream from whence it came. You're welcome.
